Brenda Adams was named publisher of the Star Group on July 1. Adams has more than 30 years of experience in community journalism. She moved to Texas from London, Ohio, where she was publisher of the daily Madison Press and four weeklies.
Prior to her four-year stint in Ohio, Adams was publisher of the Sweetwater Reporter in Texas. She also was the first female publisher at the Sweetwater Reporter and Madison Press.
Michael Dillin joined The Mexia News as managing editor on July 5. Dillin has worked as a journalist in print and television. He began his career in 1974 as a police reporter for The Florida Times-Union in Jacksonville.
After his tenure in the Florida House of Representatives as a legislative aide, he returned to the Times-Union as chief city hall reporter. Later, he was a political reporter for a CBS affiliate in Jacksonville. He has also worked as a freelance writer, a media consultant and served as director of research for the city of Jacksonville.
In 2008, Dillin returned to the newspaper profession, working in Montana, Wyoming and Kansas, before accepting the Mexia position.
Richard Franks was named chief executive officer of American Community Newspapers, owner of 86 community newspapers, 14 niche magazines, local websites and custom publications in Ohio, Minnesota, Virginia and Texas, on July 6. Franks worked as president, CEO and publisher of North of Boston Media Group/Eagle-Tribune Publishing Company until 2007. Since then, he has worked internationally as a consultant and advisor to banks and venture capital firms managing media interests, acquisitions and holdings. Franks will be assisted by Frank Shepherd, current board member of the ACN Board of Directors.
Andrew Brosig joined the Killeen Daily Herald as metro editor on July 12. Brosig, an award-winning veteran journalist with more than 20 years of experience, previously worked as managing editor of The Mexia News. He will be responsible for the Herald’s weekly publications and will oversee the Herald’s business news, including the monthly Business Journal.
Cedric Iglehart was named managing editor of the Gonzales Inquirer. Iglehart is a 15-year veteran of community newspapers. He previously worked as the sports editor at the Victoria Advocate. Prior to that, he was the publisher of the Harker Heights Evening Star and served as managing editor at The Belton Journal and Copperas Cove Leader-Press.
Burt Henry has been promoted to sports editor at the San Antonio Express-News. Henry joined the Express-News in 1989. He worked two years as the deputy sports editor and seven as the high school editor. Henry replaces Brad Lehman, who joined the Hearst Corporation as the Texas sports editor, a new position based in Houston.
Joe Olvera received the Conquistador Award from the El Paso City Council for his work in covering minorities. Olvera was a longtime reporter and columnist for the El Paso Times and the now-defunct El Paso Herald-Post. He was known for his old-school Chicano columns ending with the phrase “Sin Fin.” Olvera is the first Hispanic journalist to receive the award.
George Aldridge, Belton Journal sports writer 1969-71, is in Tunisia serving as a U.S. diplomat. Aldridge has been in the diplomatic service for 21 years. His international assignments have placed him in many European, Asian and African nations.
Aldridge will spend the first of fours years in Tunisia completing his study of the Arabic language. His job will include taking care of American tourists who have problems and helping Tunisian residents who want to get to the U.S. for college or a better paying job.
Chad Thomas was promoted to business editor at the Tyler Courier-Times-Telegraph on July 12. Thomas joined the Tyler newspaper in January as a news reporter and features writer.
He has worked as the city government reporter for The Williamson County Sun in Georgetown and as the sports editor for the Round Rock Leader. He has also worked as a sports reporter for The Dallas Morning News.
Thomas is a 2002 graduate of the University of Texas at Austin. He received his master’s degree in journalism from Ohio University in 2008.
Jessika Bailey joined the Fredericksburg Standard-Radio Post as a reporter/photographer on June 1. Bailey graduated from Texas Tech University this month with a bachelor’s degree in journalism. During college, she worked as the editor of Texastechtoday.com, a student-run news website, and wrote for La Ventana, the university’s official yearbook. She also interned with National Oil and Lube News Magazine in Lubbock.
Diana Fuentes, editor of the Laredo Morning Times, resigned Aug. 8 for personal reasons. Fuentes has won numerous awards and served on several state and national boards.
Gary Cartwright, longtime sports writer, retired after nearly 28 years as a staff writer for Texas Monthly. Over the years, he has worked as a sports writer for the Fort Worth Press, The Dallas Times Herald and the Dallas Morning News. He has also written for several national magazines including Harper’s, Life, Rolling Stone and Sports Illustrated.
Jackie Stone, former Cove Herald editor, was promoted to city editor at the Killeen Daily Herald. After graduating from the University of Texas at Austin with a bachelor’s degree in journalism, Stone moved to Wisconsin to report for the Green Bay Press-Gazette. She returned to Texas to work for The Associated Press in Austin, covering the Texas Legislature before joining the Herald in 2009.
Holly Wise was named editor of the Cove Herald on July 19. Wise has worked at newspapers in Kentucky and served as a newspaper bureau chief in New Mexico. Before joining the Herald, Wise was a staff writer for the Van Horn Advocate in WestTexas.
Clare Haefner was promoted to news/features editor at the Killeen Daily Herald on July 1. Haefner is responsible for design, content scheduling and operations flow for all Herald publications.
Haefner worked as a designer and editor at newspapers in Georgia and Florida before joining the Herald in 2008. In 2009, she was recognized as The Associated Press Star Designer of the Year for newspapers in the Herald’s circulation category. |
