Walter Humphrey, 69th president, also was national president of Sigma Delta Chi, the Society of Professional Journalists.
Humphrey was born March 13, 1904, at Trenton, Mo. He received his degree from the University of Colorado at Boulder and was editor of the student newspaper and the humor magazine.
He became editor and pressman for his high school when a printer, who had been sentenced to the penitentiary, gave him two cases of type and a foot press.
After graduation, he was hired as a reporter for the Fort Worth Press, where he advanced to assistant city editor. He served three and a half years with the Press before becoming editor of the Temple Daily Telegram.
He and wife Dorothea Griffith had three daughters.
Three different governors named Humphrey to the board of the Brazos River Authority.
