acscurlock1893_9414th president, was born in New Market, Ala., in 1845. Though very young at the time, he served in the Army of the Confederacy in Walder’s Battalion. Came to Texas and in 1883 married Miss Julia May Lorance of Cleburne. Of this union one daughter and five sons were born. For a time Scurlock was engaged in ranching in western Texas.

About 1974 he purchased the Cleburne Chronicle and edited and published that newspaper until his death – a period of 33 years. Scurlock joined the Texas Press Association in 1882, was regular in attendance and had much to do with shaping its policies.

He was remembered as a model presiding officer, a splendid writer and one who made his paper one of the outstanding weeklies in the state. He died in 1907.
