Construction is underway at the Bryan-College Station Eagle, where a second press soon will be installed, paving the way for the business to double its commercial print work.

The 9,300-square-foot expansion comes during a transformative period for the industry in which some newspapers have opted to shut down print operations and outsource the work.

However, The Eagle has 60-plus print customers, which is more than ever in its 127-year history. That trend is expected to continue, according to Eagle Publisher Crystal Dupre. She said The Eagle will start printing the Waco Tribune-Herald – The Eagle's sister paper 90 miles to the northwest – in October, becoming the third daily newspaper printed in the building on Briarcrest Drive in Bryan.

"The Eagle has an excellent reputation in the industry and it shows in the fact we are making this investment," said Dupre, who added that the new press will bring roughly 20 jobs.

Dupre attributes much of the success to the experienced, customer-focused production team that "goes above and beyond when it comes to quality and service."

"It's the people here that make the production growth possible and it's awesome to be a part of that," Dupre said. "It is an exciting time here at The Eagle. The newspaper printing opportunities are growing and we want to be part of that."

The Eagle's press prints more than 100 publications for those 60-plus customers, which translates into 400 publications and editions on average each month, according to Mark Wilson, production director.

Wilson – who said 78 percent of these runs are commercial print customers – added that The Eagle's coverage extends 138 miles west, 225 miles south, 100 miles east and 112 miles north.

"We are definitely looking to expand that footprint," he said.

College Station-based JaCody Construction broke ground this month and, barring unexpected delays, the new Goss Urbanite press should be operational by October.

The Eagle and Waco Tribune-Herald are owned by Omaha-based BH Media Group, which is the ninth-largest newspaper group in the nation and a subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway.
