As the wind blew, the stench of fecal matter wafted outside the abandoned trailer. Loud crying and hollering was clearly audible from the animals trapped inside. As a trained investigator of the Houston SPCA cut the lock from the door, both the smell and the noise grew stronger.
Four SPCA officers took 22 neglected animals, 14 cats and eight dogs, from the light blue trailer, located at 16611 West Sandy Meadows in Rosharon off of County Road 606 Thursday afternoon.
The seizure came about after a neighbor reported the horrible conditions to animal control officers at the Brazoria County Sheriffs Department.
According to SPCA officials, the owners of the house, Doyce and Jerry Gay, were served with a warrant, which was posted on their property at the time of the seizure. They are required to appear before Pct. 2, P1. 2 Justice of the Peace Wayne DuBose on July 7.
"I believe that evidence will show that the SPCA should be given custody of these animals," SPCA public relations officer Stacy Wilbanks said. "Local law enforcement can enforce animal cruelty charges following this."
