He is a graduate of Baylor University and of the Graduate School of Journalism at Columbia University. He has also taught at Baylor (1961 to 1974), Southern Methodist University (1974 to 1997) and the University of Texas at Arlington (1998 to 2001). In 1994 he was named the outstanding journalism teacher in the nation by the Society of Professional Journalists. In 2001 he was presented the President’s Award for outstanding teaching by the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communications.
