William MillerWilliam Miller

William “Billy” Milton Miller died June 9, 2016, at the age of 91. 

Miller and his wife Sybil Martin were both trained in journalism at the newspaper started by his father, The Spearman Reporter. Miller became editor and publisher in 1967. In 1968 he purchased the Hansford Plainsman in Spearman and started the Gruver Statesman 1972. At one time he was publishing three weekly newspapers in Hansford County. 

Miller retired in 1987 and sold all three newspapers to Texas Independent Newspapers, Inc., 

 

 

 


Mac OvertonJames “Mac” Overton 

James “Mac” Overton died June 5, 2016, at age 66.

He was editor of The Gilmer Mirror from 1992 to 2014 and former editor of the Big Sandy/Hawkins Journal. He also worked for papers in Mineola and Quitman. 

Friends and family recall Overton as a fashionable, eccentric man of many passions: history, knives and dogs. He enjoyed dressing up and dressing well, preferring coat and tie and hats for work, even in the summer.
