Roger Dewayne Cline

Roger Dewayne Cline, 54, managing editor of the Big Spring Herald, died April 19 in San Angelo following heart surgery.

A native of Baltimore, Maryland, Cline grew up in Port Arthur and attended the University of Texas at Permian Basin, where he earned bachelor degrees in computer science (2004) and English (2005), graduating summa cum laude. He also attended Lamar University in Beaumont.

Cline began his newspaper career in 1998 as a reporter for the Port Arthur News, covering city and county politics, hard news, features and sports.

He started at the Big Spring Herald in July 2001 as a reporter covering the city and county beats, hard news and features.

His stories often were picked up by the Associated Press.

He left for a couple of years to work for the Snyder Daily News but eventually returned to the Big Spring Herald, where he was promoted to managing editor in August 2022.

Although the majority of his career was spent as a newspaper journalist, he also dabbled in teaching.

From 1992 to 1994, he was a teacher’s aide at Pease Elementary School in Port Arthur, and from 2010 to 2013 he worked as a substitute teacher for both Big Spring ISD and Coahoma ISD.

Cline married Shirley Wyrosdik Limones, and she preceded him in death in 2013.

He is survived by his parents, a brother, two stepsons and five step grandchildren.

Services were held April 24 in Big Spring.
