Page Design

Division 2 Dailies 7,000 to 99,999

1st. The Beaumont Enterprise - Very nice masthead and skybox. Great use of photos and artwork, good use of typography, nice choice of fonts for headline.

2nd. Midland Reporter-Telegram - Nice masthead, clean easy to read headlines. Easy to read, flows well, nice photos and design.

3rd. Odessa American - Good use of photography, clean crisp, headlines, nice flow.

4th. The Facts, Clute - Good use of photos, easy to read, some text could use a little more leading.

Division 3 Dailies Less Than 7,000

1st. Texas City Sun - Great layout and design!! Fonts/text is easy to read, complemented by great photos and artwork, even the registry is better than average. A model layout and design for other papers to follow. Very effective.

2nd. Brownwood Bulletin - Thought not terribly innovative. I was really impressed by the effectiveness of merging a photo/artwork into the text. The Pearl submission is what is particularly fetching.

3rd. Waxahachie Daily Light - Much better than average, the design on this page is great! The use of large headlines, medium subheadlines and small text makes the innovation aspect on this newspaper stand out.

4th. The Huntsville Item - Great. The fonts and sizes used for the text make this an uncluttered, easy to ready publication. The overall design is good. Good job.

Division 4 Semiweeklies 4,001 or More

1st. Hood County News - Great layout. Colors are sharp and crisp, not muddy. Graphics picked out were great. Nice paper.

2nd. The Graham Leader - Very good layout overall. Has a nice appearance. News and community events were nicely designed.

3rd. The Bowie News - Great front page. Color on pics was good. Overall layout is wonderful and clean.

4th. The Bastrop Advertiser - Nice layout. Headings are distinguished. Photo and photo sizes are good.

Division 5 Semiweeklies 4,000 or Less

1st. The Monahans News - Good use on graphics for a no color paper. Excellent layout, photos and placement. Overall an excellent paper.

2nd. Lamesa Press-Reporter - Good use of spot color on front page. Forum, Sports and Lifestyles overall excellent!

3rd. The Canyon News - Good use of photo for front page, layout on sports page, good separation and balance on opinion page.

4th. Breckenridge American - Layout excellent, good use of white space, photo size and division of news articles.

Division 6 Large Weeklies

1st. Duncanville Today - Well designed pages. "All that jazz" pages very nice. Front page had nice look. I wanted to read it!

2nd. Fredericksburg Standard-Radio Post - Top-notch design. Great front page. Nice color usage. Clean lines. I would subscribe!

3rd. Houston Business Journal - Great little paper. Front page drew me in. Clean lines to pages. Nice color and design!

4th. Port Aransas South Jetty - Needs color. Great look other than that. Pages well designed photos old stories and placed well.

 

 

Division 7 Medium Large Weeklies

1st. Rockwall County News - Good use of skybox/masthead. Very easy to read. Photo captions could be point or two smaller. Nice photography. Good use of typography.

2nd. DeSoto Today - Very nice skybox. Good overall layout. Very easy read. Good font choices for headlines.

3rd. Colorado County Citizen - Nice overall layout. Easy to read headlines. Good size for body copy.

4th. Tyler County Booster - Nice choice of fonts on masthead. On front page text is a little tight at times.

Division 8 Medium Weeklies

1st. The Springtown Epigraph - Wow! An extremely attractive paper. Grabs the readers attention. Put together very well! Wonderful use of photos and sports is great!

2nd. The Community News, Aledo - Really nice paper. Front page is fabulous. Life and community design great also.

3rd. Cedar Hill Today - Really nice paper. Front page looks great. Black tie page is really nice too.

4th. Pearland Reporter-News - Easy to read. Front page terrific - put together very well.

Division 9 Small Medium Weeklies

1st. Midlothian Today - I like the design of these pages The pictures are excellent. The concept of being consistent is excellent.

2nd. Lexington Leader - It was a nice clean looking paper. Clear photos and color that lined up. Great job!

3rd. The Citizen, Clear Lake - I liked the design of these pages. The color was nice. The pages are clear and consistent.

4th. Friendswood Reporter-News - I really like the layout of the pages. Everything stood out on its own. Color was great.

Division 10 Small Weeklies

1st. The Eldorado Success - Nice large skybox/masthead! Easy to read headlines. Nice use of "soft cornered boxes" on photos. Try placing more ads on the right instead of the left sides.

2nd. The Princeton Herald - Nice use of color photos on front page, why not add some color to the masthead/skybox? Nice size of body copy. A little more art wouldn't hurt.

3rd. The Brackett News - Nice masthead, but could be reproduced a little nicer. Easy to read, layout is for the most part, reader-friendly.

4th. The Morton Tribune - Easy to read, nice large headlines, photography. Could use some work. Add some additional graphics, paper is very text heavy.
