L.B. Smith, 83rd president, was associated with The Brady Standard as reporter, editor, owner and publisher from 1928-93.

He was publisher for more than 50 years, gradually turning over operations of the newspaper to his son, Larry.

His wife, Vivian, wrote a front-page column when her husband gave up the task after more than 50 years. They also had a daughter.

Born in Weatherford, Smith grew up in Perrin near Mineral Wells and went to North Texas Agricultural College (now the University of Texas at Arlington). He got his journalism degree in 1926.

Smith was honored with Texas Press Association’s 50-year award in 1978.

He was president of West Texas Press Association in 1951-52.
