W.A. Johnson was the 31st president and joined Texas Press Association in 1894, and from that time until his last illness never missed an annual convention. He served on all of the key committees, including the executive committee.

He was elected president at the Marlin meeting in 1909.

Johnson was a native of Minnesota, but came to Texas as a young man. His first newspaper work in Texas was at Denison.

In the early 1890s he established the Hall County Herald at Memphis.

Johnson served two terms as state senator. At the close of his second term he was elected lieutenant governor. He died in 1922.
