Born in Lamar County April 4, 1872, Thomas W. Perkins, 28th president, entered a printing shop and learned the printer’s trade as a boy. In 1902 he entered the newspaper business, purchasing the Wylie Rustler.

For many years he had been one of the owners and publishers of the Daily Courier-Gazette and the Weekly Democrat Gazette in McKinney.

He joined Texas Press Association in 1893. He served as mayor of his home city for about 10 years. He served two terms in the state Senate and came within a few votes of election to Congress in 1912.
